started Glucophage for type 2 diabetes? advice please.?
hi, yesterday i started taking glucophage for type 2 diabetes. It runs in my family, my father is type 1 my mother type 2….i have been on diet control but my sugars remained high so my gp has put me on this medication. Bad diahreah has started today, is this linked to the meds, plus i haven’t recieved any diet advice, and would like to know what foods i should stick to or avoid. I’m confused as something as simple as eating a tomato today has raised my sugar level dramatically….thought they were healthy…by the way i’m female and 31 years old
There is no doubt that lifestyle change has more effect on type 2 diabetes than medication, However the changes need to be dramatic with minimal intake of sugars and maximum effort put into regular moderate to vigorous exercise. Metformin is the drug of choice for overweight type 2s, and 95% of them are overweight! It does tend to produce side effects such as nausea and diarrhoea initially, and your physician/diabetologist did of course have a duty to warn you of this. Good news it tends to improve after 2 or 3 weeks on the drug.

right check your medication. see if it says any side effects at all?References :

Your diarrhoea is likely to be caused by the metformin and tends to get better over the next few weeks if it does not some people find that they suffer from fewer side effects with the sr metformin. As no-one has spoken to you about diet I suggest that you look at the gi food plan this will explain how certain foods affect the blood glucose levels see web site below. Tomato should be ok for you when did you test your levels? If testing after eating then the test needs to be done 2 hours after the food. What you ate with the tomato may have affected the level as well. Any unprocessed food or wholegrain food is the best and highly processed foods are the worst. ALL food is ok but anything containing added sugar is best kept to a minimum. If you are in the UK ask your doctor or surgery nurse to send you on an expert patient programme where you will learn more about the treatment of your disease. The advice you’ve been given so far is good, BUT please discuss your effects with your doctor.References :
